Today in American history, on November 20, 1789, New Jersey ratified the United States Bill of Rights. It was the first state to ratify and paved the way for the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution.

New Jersey was one of the original 13 colonies. During the Revolutionary War, more battles were fought in New Jersey than in any of the other states because of its geographic location among the colonies. New Jersey was the third state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1787 and the first to ratify the Bill of Rights.
