John Davis was born on February 18, 1874 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the youngest of seven children to parents David Davis and Mary Ann Burdekin.
In 1880, the family is living at 3238 Jones Street, Chicago, Illinois. John is five years old.
On February 26, 1896, John married May J Greenman.
They went on to have four children together:
- Grace May Davis (b. 1896 – d. 1968)
- Raymond C. Davis (b. 1898)
- Mildred Greenman Davis (b. 1899 – d. 1987)
- Milton John Davis (b. 1904)
In 1900, the family is living at a rented house located at 3523 S Seeley Avenue in the South Town Township of Chicago, Illinois. John lists his occupation as postal clerk. (The house image seen below is a view of the present day address.)
In 1910, the family is living at 2044 Cullam Avenue in Chicago City, Illinois. The family now owns their own home. John lists his occupation as clerk at post office. (The house image seen below is a view of the present day address.)
In 1920, the family is living at 2611 W Sunnyside Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. John still lists his occupation as clerk at the post office. (The house image seen below is a view of the present day address.)
In 1930, the John and May are living on their own at the same residence as they were in 1920. John lists his occupation as a clerk for the United States Post Office.
Following May’s death in 1930, John appears to have remained a widow and not remarried. I also appears that he lost touch with his children as well. When he died on May 9, 1952, he is a resident at the Cook County Hospital. The informant on his death certificate is from the hospital and does not have almost any information about him at all implying that there was no one with him at the time of death nor for the following six days. His cause of death is listed as myocardial infarction. He was buried at Oak Forest Cemetery on May 15, 1952.
