Today in American History – Billy the Kid

On this day in history, William Henry McCarty, Jr. was born.  This name may not be familiar to you however.  Some of this man’s more well-known names include William H. Bonney, Henry Antrim, and he was best known as Billy the Kid.  Who is Billy the Kid?  Where did he come from and what caused him to become one of the United States’ most notorious criminals?

Today in American History – Thomas Edison

On November 21, 1877, Thomas Edison announced his invention of the first phonograph record  play and recorder in New Jersey.  While his was not the first invention to record sound, Edison’s phonograph was the first that also had the ability to play back the recorded sounds. He is pictured below in this 1870 photograph with his famous invention.

Genealogy News – Farming Family Ties

As we continue into the twenty-first century, there is little doubt that things are changing.  The economy is in the gutter and right alongside it are the housing and job market.  One aspect that isn’t suffering is the price of rural farmland and its harvest. What this is causing however, is for the younger generations to sell off their family farmland, which often includes family ties going back centuries.  ”Instead of digging in to benefit from the boom in grain prices, the next generation is opting to cash out of the small, family owned farms that harbor centuries of rural wisdom and deep tradition.” (Huffstutter) Instead of carrying on the family farm after their parents, trends show that children are selling off these ancestral lands and moving to more urban areas away from their family. What does this do for familial ties to land and the ideals of the family farm?

Genealogy News – Families Reconnected

Another heart wrenching story of family tree research leading to the connection of two long-lost families.  During WWII, two brothers named Nahum and Yaakov Korenblum fled Poland during the Nazi invasion.  They ended up joining the army and were separated.  They both spent the rest of their livest trying to track each other down.
