Gardner Spangler Eichelberger (Phillip, John, George, John, George) was born on August 17, 1848 in St Louis, Missouri. He was the second youngest of eleven children to parents George Forsyth Eichelberger and Maria Gardner Spangler. Gardner was obviously named after his mother’s side of the family.
